Students from The Weald School took a big step towards retaining the National Greenpower Car championship title they won last October, whilst racing at Goodwood on Sunday 14 June. 

Greenpower car racing involves racing cars built by students aged 11 to 16, and powered by two car batteries.  Schools from all over the country compete.  The heat at Goodwood Motor Racing Circuit involved 58 cars.  Students race over an hour and a half, with the winner being judged by who has covered the most distance in the time. 

In Race 1 The Weald’s “Purple Predator” won the race, with last year’s champion car coming in third place.  In Race 2 the same cars achieved second and sixth place.  These results secure the places of both cars in the national final later in the year. 

Year 10 student, Max Mooney, commented, “We were really pleased with how the cars run but we have much more to do and we know we can go faster and further.  We added some sophisticated electronics to the “Purple Predator” for this race, and it worked a treat”.  The Weald cars will be in action in a few weeks’ time at Rockingham Race Track, where the students and cars hope to perform even better.
