Former players come together to celebrate 25 years of The Old Boys.

Wednesday 16 December marked 25 years of the Weald ‘Old Boys’ Rugby Reunion Match and Dinner, between the fresh faced Cherubs and Golden Oldies.  Over 60 former students attended to help celebrate the event in style. The Weald has always has a strong rugby history, winning many titles, accolades and producing international players along the way.

Before the match, the Old Boys enjoyed a tour of the school, allowing them to reminisce about their school and rugby playing days.

Guy Hannell, Old Boy and former Peter Sizzey Cup winner said ‘ In 25 years, times have changed, except for the Old Boys; talented players, a pitch and a referee, and excellent company. Long may it continue.’

The Cherubs kicked off this highly anticipated match and despite their best efforts, The Golden Oldies quickly came together to remember their winning ways, by scoring the opening try of the match. In the end, age and experience triumphed over youth and exuberance, with the Golden Oldies winning 38-7.

George Steere, current XV captain ‘We always hear stories about the teams before us and today I got to play against some of them for the first time. They’re all still surprisingly good, it was a pleasure to play and hope it will be the first of many’

In keeping with tradition everyone enjoyed a post-match drink, followed by a Christmas dinner with speeches and ‘man of the match’ awards, including the memorial Peter Sizzey Cup. This ‘Clubman of the Year’ award goes to those who have gone above and beyond for their team.  This year’s winner is Billy Lord, member of the 2014-15 XV team.

Mr David Sainsbury, former Weald PE teacher and event organiser toasted the room   ‘whether we left school in 1981 or 2014, we all share the same idea of what this night should be about.  In short an excellent game of rugby, a good meal and the chance to meet up with the guys with whom we shared some very special times. There will be no doubt that we will all enjoy a memorable evening!’
