Meet the Senior Leadership Team
Peter Woodman - Headteacher
I joined The Weald as Headteacher in January 2009 and enjoy every day at this fantastic school. Our achievements are very much as a result of strong collective efforts from students, staff, parents and many others. We work to help students achieve excellent academic results and progress. We are passionate about ensuring that our students also develop well personally through participation in wider activities such as clubs, competitions, student leadership and trips.
Prior to working at The Weald I have worked in schools in Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire and Worcestershire as well as Australia and Canada. I hold degrees from Cambridge University, the University of Victoria, B.C, Canada, the Open University and postgraduate education qualifications from Oxford and Cambridge Universities.
I returned to teach in West Sussex after some 30 years away. I am the product of a West Sussex education and am keen to serve the community that gave me such a great start in life. I love golf, travelling and amateur dramatics.
Sarah Edwards - Deputy Headteacher
I joined The Weald in June 2014 and am thrilled to be part of such a vibrant, varied and happy school. Every day brings its rewards and of course its challenges, and the most enjoyable part of my job is supporting our students through the tricky transition between childhood and adulthood.
My responsibilities include overseeing: the curriculum across the school, our thriving sixth form, the progress of students through Key Stage 4, students’ options for GCSE and Key Stage 5, and any issues regarding our teaching staff.
I am a languages teacher by trade, having earned my degree at the University of Leeds and my teaching qualification at Cambridge. I have worked in West Sussex schools since 1997.
Karen Furse - Assistant Headteacher
I have been an Assistant Headteacher at The Weald since 2008, having been Head of Languages here since 2002. The reason for remaining here so long? Our fantastic students and staff! I am proud to be part of The Weald. It is incredibly rewarding to work with our young people and see them achieve and flourish.
My responsibilities include overseeing the pastoral side of the school: pupil development and well-being, safeguarding, our house system, admissions, inclusion and student voice.
Having gained my degree at the University of Southampton, my original choice of career was in a bank in Frankfurt but I soon transferred to do my PGCE at the University of Bath, working in two other West Sussex schools before joining The Weald.
Zoe Sorrell - Assistant Headteacher
I started my teaching career in the West Midlands, having studied for a degree in History and then completing my teacher training qualification at the University of Birmingham. Many years later, after teaching in Hampshire and Milan, I returned home to West Sussex and have been teaching at the Weald since 2004. I was originally appointed as a teacher of History, and became an Assistant Headteacher in 2014. I have always been struck by the fantastic relationships here - most notably between students and staff.
The staff at The Weald are passionate about the learning and personal development of the students, and the students are genuinely appreciative and value their experience here. In my current role, I aim to support and enhance these relationships by leading the development of teaching and learning, as well as through my responsibilities for Austen house, exams and a number of subject areas.
Tom Brixey - Assistant Headteacher
I started my career as a History teacher and still love this part of my job and the study of History. This began with my own History education in West Sussex and then continued at the University of Leeds. I have led History departments in Worthing and the Humanities faculty at Steyning Grammar School before starting at The Weald.
I really value and work hard to support the school’s commitment to high standards in all areas of our work.
This dedication and aspiration for all members of the school’s community and the wide range of opportunities on offer here are really special and give this school a unique character. It is a very great pleasure to work in this environment with such dedicated colleagues and students.
My responsibilities include staff training and development, line managing KS3 and Livingstone House, e-Learning, breaktime duties and line managing several subject areas.
Steve Catt - Assistant Headteacher
I joined The Weald in January 2014 as an Assistant Head and share the school’s wildly important goals and beliefs. As a School we strive to develop hard working citizens with a growth mind-set that choose to do the right thing. Every day at The Weald you get a real feel of cheerful staff and pupils who want to succeed.
My responsibilities include overseeing: the school timetable, our outstanding exam results, reporting and tracking, analysis of school data, parents’ evenings and ensuring Wilberforce win the House cup! Also, I am a keen swimmer, triathlete and footballer.
My first degree was a Masters in Civil Engineering from the University of Surrey. This led to a career in Civil Engineering across the UK and Germany. Projects involved the construction of everything from office developments to primary schools. At the age of 26 I made the leap of faith to retrain as a Mathematics teacher and have never looked back! Working at The Weald School is immensely rewarding and challenging where no day is the same. I am privileged to work within such a supportive and happy environment.
Jayne Durham - Business Manager
I joined The Weald in 2009 after a very varied career in commerce and the charitable sectors and I have found The Weald to be a truly unique, exciting and vibrant community. My role involves leading the school in all non-teaching activities, including managing the school’s budget and acting as overall line manager for the school’s 80+ support staff.
I studied English at Bristol University and then went on to qualify as an Accountant, holding the position of Finance Director in a number of companies.
I am also a qualified teacher which helps me to understand the wider context of school life.
When not at school, I take every opportunity to indulge my passion for skiing!
