Physical Education

Curriculum Intent Statement

SEE BELOW FOR CURRICULUM MAP

Our curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all students can achieve the points below:

  • Students continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They should develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
  • Children take part in regular physical activity.
  • All children have the opportunity to succeed in physical education.
  • Children are inspired to lead healthy, active lives and build resilience. We aim to give children different pathways into different sports and pathways to live a healthy and happy life.
  • Our PE curriculum gives children the opportunity to excel within physical education and offers children opportunities to compete at different levels of competition.
  • Children have the opportunity to take part in a range of different physical activities within physical education lessons and extra-curricular activities.

Ultimately all students get the opportunity to gain physical literacy skills and an understanding of the benefits of healthy active lifestyles to take forward into their adult lives. They will take part in regular structured physical activity for the benefit of their physical, mental and social health as well as enjoyment.

Key Stage 3 Course Information

In Key Stage 3 PE we take a  Mastery approach to teaching, learning and assessment. In order to ensure that our students are ‘ready to progress’ to Key Stage 4 courses, we have produced a statement highlighting what students need to know, remember and be able to do to have 'mastered' the subject. It is against these that we assess. In students’ books and in their work we would expect to see evidence of revisiting concepts and content and students reflecting on their work and feedback from teachers. We would also expect to see evidence of the content and concepts students need to know - these will often be in the format of a knowledge organiser. This will be backed up with evidence of 'low stakes' testing so students can measure their own progress.

See our Curriculum map for further details on the content of the key Stage 3 course, which includes links to knowledge organisers.
