Exam Results

Academic achievement in 2008-09 was again extremely high for students at The Weald School. This provides an excellent base for the school to improve its results further in the coming years as The Weald adapts its curriculum to offer a wider range of opportunities to more students. It also confirms the judgements made by the Ofsted team in March 2009 when the school was described as “a very good school with considerable strengths”.

A Level results were the highest the school has had. 50% of entries were at grades A and B, whilst 75% of entries were at grades A to C. The pass rate remained high at 98%. The average total points score for students was 852, up from 802 in 2008. This reflects solid achievement across the whole ability range. Some 50 students achieved
810 points or more, which is equivalent to 3 grade As. This is approaching half of the Year 13 cohort. Individual performances were excellent with 12 students gaining 3 A grades or more, and 8 students achieving 4 A grades or more. Several students were in the top ten performers in one of their subjects nationwide. Two students gained admission to Oxford or Cambridge. The AS results, which are effectively “work in progress”, as students have opportunities to improve these scores during Year 13, are in line with the performance of recent Year 12s and give a strong base for results in 2010.

Achievement of students in GCSE at Year 11 was outstanding. 83% of students achieved 5 or more A*-C GCSE grades. This is the highest score in the school’s history, and surpasses the previous high by some 7%. 96% of students achieved 5 or more A*-G grades. An impressive 95% of students gained at least one C at GCSE. There were many subjects with their proportion of entries in excess of 80% A*-C. The 5 or more A*-C GCSE pass rate including English and Maths was 63%, (and 66% when functional English and Maths was included). The performance of students who took a range of vocational courses, both at school and college, was strong. The average points score for students was also at a record high of 446 points, demonstrating good achievement across the whole ability range. The gap between boys and girls in most areas was small.

There were some outstanding individual performances. 33 Students achieved 8 A* or A grades, whilst 55 students achieved at least 5 A* or A grades. Four students achieved 8 A* grades or better. Our highest achieving student achieved 12 A* and 1 A grade.
