School Sports Partnership

School Sports PartnershipThe Weald School is the host or hub site for the Central Sussex School Sport Partnership (SSP). The SSP works with all the schools in the Midhurst, Petworth, Billingshurst and Horsham area. It is managed by Julia Duncan, the Partnership Development Manager.

The School Sports Partnership has been implemented to help in meeting Government objectives of improving fitness levels, pupil concentration, self esteem and commitment and to create clearer pathways for talented young athletes.

The SSP is one strand of the Physical Education, School Sport, Club Link (PESSCL) strategy.

The Main objective for 2008 is that 85% of young people should be participating in at least 2 hours of high quality PE and School Sport. Past 2008, we will be working towards the government 5 hour offer; it is hoped that School Sport Partnerships will work in partnership with other community agencies to give young people the opportunity to participate in up to 5 hours of school and community based activities per week.

We are aiming to increase participation in:

  • High quality PE
  • High quality out of school hours learning
  • High quality informal activity
  • High quality competition and performance
  • Community based sport

Also to:

  • Improve attitude, behaviour and attendance
  • Increase attainment and achievement

The Partnership work is managed and delivered through the following:

  • Partnership Development Manager - strategic direction, budget, liaison with outside agencies and funding/initiatives
  • A School Sport Co-ordinator, a PE specialist, is released from each secondary and middle school to work with their own family of primary schools for 2 days per week
  • A Primary Link Teacher is appointed in each primary school (their PE co-ordinator) to liaise with the school sport co-ordinator and is given release time and training
