Sports College

Sports CollegeSince being awarded our second specialism in sport in 2006 we have been able to offer a range of opportunities in PE and sport that were not previously available. These have included:

  • New technology, including digital cameras and accompanying software, to enable pupils to compare their performance to that of the best in the world.
  • Huts 20 & 21 have been fitted with new computers for PE lessons
  • Our A Level and GCSE are able to study parts of their course at home using the VLE.
  • Our Year 13 A Level students visit Chichester University to work in a top class fitness laboratory.
  • We hold our own A Level Revision Conference every Easter.
  • We have introduced B Tec Sport to Key Stage 4.
  • Danny Crates, a gold medallist Paralympian, visited the Weald during our 50 th anniversary year and spoke to all the pupils. He inspired us to achieve all we can despite the barriers in life we might have to overcome.
  • Our climbing wall has been updated and upgraded and we have bought climbing boots for all to use.
  • Sports CollegeWe have been able to widen our range of extra curricular activities, sometimes using coaches from outside school, to include some new activities we have not previously offered including golf, badminton and short mat bowls.
  • We have a Gifted and Talented course being run to provide opportunities and support for some of our most talented sportsmen and women.
  • We have a Students’ Sports Council where the voice of the student body is heard and plays a part in determining the direction of sport in the school.
  • In the summer of 2008 all of Year 9 are taking part in a cross curricula project called the Weald Olympics with sport, the Olympics and Weald Sports Day providing the central themes.
  • Year 9 also compile a batch of data based on their own fitness testing which they then use for their statistics work in Maths at the start of Year 10.
  • Some of our Junior Schools are bringing their pupils to the Weald for taster PE sessions.
  • Some of our 6 th Form English Language students have visited a Sports Press Agency to experience sports journalism first hand. They are using their sports journalism skills in their English course work. Some Year 10 students will soon be having the same opportunity.
