Recently one of our Heads of House, Mr Paul Sweeney, won the prestigious Outstanding Teacher at the County Times Community Awards. These celebrate a range of projects that inspire and help others throughout the community. He was nominated by an an ex-pupil who credited him with helping her through her mental health issues. She wrote:

‘He always takes time to listen to each student. He goes out of his way to help anyone. He treats each student as an individual and he communicates with them in a way they understand. He helps students overcome problems and achieve their best.’

‘He helped me through school and on my long journey with mental health issues. He’s been there for the good and the bad, He is also there for many other people. This man deserves a gold medal!’

It was a hotly contested category this year and Mr Sweeny was up against other primary and secondary school teachers, teaching assistants and pastoral staff. He went on to say ‘I only found out a few weeks ago that I had been shortlisted. That was a complete surprise in itself, I didn’t ever expect to win! Just the fact that an ex-student has made the time and effort to nominate me is extremely humbling. The feedback and support since winning has been lovely. It’s a great reminder of what a fantastic pastoral system we have at The Weald and the positive impact it can have on students’ lives.'

The glitzy awards ceremony was held at The Capitol in Horsham. ‘I had a great time celebrating alongside all the other nominees and winners. It was such an inspiring evening, hearing from all the other winners and watching the performance by the Ariel Company Theatre Group that is made up of children with special need and their buddies.’

When asked what he has done with the trophy, Mr Sweeney said ‘It’s currently displayed at home on the coffee table. It would be great to bring it into School so the rest of the team can share in its success and enjoy it as much as I am.’
