A Level Spanish students and a group of year 9 GCSE Spanish students spent four days in the beautiful region of Andalucía in the south of Spain during the last week of term. With this being the famous Semana Santa week of Easter celebrations in Spain, this was a great time for us to experience true Spanish culture. We did just that when we indulged in some tapas tasting in a local tapas bar, and we visited a traditional bullring but our true talents shone through in our flamenco lesson when students learned a full flamenco routine - ¡Olé! We stayed in the coastal town of Benalmádena where we were lucky enough to take advantage of the lovely sunny weather and the beach on our doorstep. However most of our time was spent visiting local towns and cities including the mountain village of Mijas where we saw the donkey taxis, the old town of Marbella and the famous Puerto Banus. We spent a day in Malaga where we explored the Moorish fortress the Alcazaba and the neighbouring Castillo Gibralfaro. Then we passed on to art to discover some of the works of art of Picasso at the Picasso Museum, after we visited the square we he was born. Our final morning was spent on our cable car trip up Calamorro Mountain. Here some of us ventured up the mountain paths, while others admired the interesting birds of prey and thanks to it being a lovely clear day, we could see views of the coast of Africa. It was great to see our students being so enthusiastic about practising their Spanish throughout the trip and also representing the Weald in such a positive manner. I hope that this will be an experience which will have let our students understand more about Spanish culture, and one which they will not forget!
