Busy Start to The Weald Rugby Season
The Weald’s Year 9, 10 and 1st XV rugby teams have all made excellent starts to their seasons.
The Weald’s Year 9, 10 and 1st XV rugby teams have all made excellent starts to their seasons. The Year 9 team have picked up where they left off from last season, qualifying top of their Sussex Cup group after comfortable victories against St Andrews and St Philip Howard. They also competed in the annual Mid Sussex Tournament, where they scored sixteen tries and conceded only three in their five games, to win the competition.
The Year 10 team have also had a busy start, competing in the National Natwest Cup, a first for Weald Rugby teams, and testament to the quality of the side. They won their first round match 60-0 against St Philip Howard and followed this with an excellent performance to beat a strong Steyning side 27-12. This resulted in a very tough draw against Brighton College in round 3. The boys put in a committed performance, with particular strength in the second half, but eventually lost 33-17 to a team that will probably go a long way in the competition. Apart from this game, the boys have won all their other fixtures and will hope to for success as they enter the Sussex Cup after half term.
The 1st XV have also had a successful start to their season. Their first competitive fixture was a 10 a-side tournament in Hove and although they narrowly lost their first game, went on to win their remaining three to claim the Shield competition. They recently lost in the second round of the Sussex Cup, after conceding a try in the last minute, but will now hope to go a long way in the Shield competition. A handsome 55-0 win over Midhurst has also helped to make the early season a successful one.
